EFFECTIVENESS EVIDENCE FRAMEWORK FOR ENGAGE

Page | 46 SEED™ provides a robust foundation for validating educational product ePectiveness. Product claims are identified; these claims are then linked to product components, content standards and prior research. This Claims-centered approach robustly accommodates contemporary demands for evidence-based solutions in education, by successfully addressing ESSA evidence requirements. Educational publishers and edtech providers can be confident knowing that their solutions are backed by evidence, compliant with ESSA, and are consistent with the contemporary standards for research in education. In addition to yielding ESSA Level 4 Product EPectiveness, it also oPers a generative framework for defining studies targeting ESSA Level 1, 2, or 3 evidence. Here is a summary of the SEED™ steps: SEED™ Steps for Completion 1. Define the product purpose including the problems it is intended to solve, the targeted outcomes (end states you expect to occur), and the logic or rationale explaining the mechanism underlying product use that gives rise to the educational outcomes justifying use of the product. 2. Identify and organize a list of the product instructional components (strategies activities, and materials) provided with the product, the list of potential research sources (e.g., books, journals, web), and identify the list of content standards (e.g., state standards for the subject domain of the product, or national standards for the subject domain of the product). 3. Create the list of product claims by linking the targeted outcomes with the claims alleged to be the result of product use. This takes the form of [Students] [using the product] [achieve targeted outcome 1…n]. The number of claims is typically between 3 and 8, but the actual number should be driven by the specific situation. Too few claims lack suPicient specificity; too many claims and the message may get lost in the trees and miss Ihe forest. 4. Review each claim against the list of product instructional components, standards, and research. For each claim determine the product strategies and materials associated with that claim. Similarly, for each claim determine the prior research, and the content standards associated with that claim. 5. Create an EPectiveness Evidence Framework. First describe the product, purpose, rationale, targeted outcomes, and the claims. Second, in a table or spreadsheet, detail the linkages (warrants) between the claims and evidence sources. The first column should list the claims. Three columns should follow to include the product strategies and materials, the content standards, and prior research.
