Page | 34 Analysis of Study Questions Question 1: Determining the Impact of Engage Instruction on Intervention Group Annual Growth in Language Skills Do grade 9−12 students receiving instruction incorporating Engage (intervention group) show significant growth in reading skills over the course of a school year? What is the magnitude of growth achieved by these grade 9−12 students receiving instruction incorporating Engage (intervention group)? To answer Question 1, we will examine the growth in reading skills achieved between the beginning and the end of the school year in the intervention group incorporating Engage in their instruction. The analysis will compare the beginning- and end-of-year formative assessment scores as illustrated in Figure 1 below. Figure 1 Question 1 Study Design Language Skills Growth Following Engage Instruction We will examine the growth in grade 9−12 language skills for the students included in the intervention group. Language skill growth is operationalized as the mean diPerence in pre- and posttest scores. We will calculate the overall language skills growth as the diPerence in the mean scores using paired samples tests at the .05 level of significance. The data will be examined for the overall group and by grade level. The ePect size (Cohen’s d) will be reported.
