EFFECTIVENESS EVIDENCE FRAMEWORK FOR ENGAGE

Page | 30 The increasing need for solutions to help students acquire language skills has led to the development of several products and services to help with this challenge. Among those products is Engage, which is the focus of this study. Demonstrating E0ectiveness Demonstrating that Engage is ePective is a process of marshalling evidence in support of the claim that instruction incorporating Engage increases students’ language skills. No single study can conclusively establish this claim; multiple sources of evidence enhance the claim that Engage is ePective in developing students’ language skills. The results of this study should be viewed along with other evidence of Engage’s ePectiveness (e.g., Evaluating the E.ectiveness of VHL’s Engage for Improving High School Students’ Language Skills: An ESSA Level 4 Study of E.ectiveness, SEG Measurement, 2024). The Intervention Students in grade 9−12 classrooms participating in this study will be provided with sustained instruction incorporating Engage for approximately 32 weeks. Teachers will be provided with training in the use of Engage at the outset of the program and will have access to district instructional support personnel for continued support in delivering the intervention. Engage is a language and literacy program created for high school use that provides evidence-based instruction incorporating current research-driven learning science and language development practices. The program builds language proficiency through research-driven lessons and activities and engaging texts and content-driven lessons. It also provides a variety of print and digital classroom resources that provide support and motivation. Engage provides tools for teachers to assess ongoing learning progress, discover skills gaps, and personalize instruction. The study will be conducted in three or more schools in one or two districts. Districts are being recruited from February through August 2024. Approximately 1,500 students are targeted for the study.
