IAE-41 TEACHING WITH IMAGINA Suggestions for Using Cultura Preparación • Preview the vocabulary in Preparación using the activities provided and the suggestions for teaching vocabulary on page IAE-35. • Refer students to the Imagina section for background information and cultural context. Cultural Readings • Talk to students about how to become effective readers in Spanish. Point out the importance of using reading strategies. Encourage them to read every selection more than once. Explain that they should read the entire text through first to gain a general understanding of the main ideas without stopping to look up words. Then, they should read the text again for a more in-depth understanding of the material. • Discourage students from translating the readings into English and relying too heavily on a dictionary. Tell them that reading directly in the language will help them grasp the meaning better and improve their ability to discuss the reading in Spanish. • Use the reading to reinforce the themes and linguistic structures of each lesson. Análisis • Have students scan the comprehension questions before reading. Ask students to summarize the reading orally or in writing. News and Cultural Updates • Additional cultural material is available in the News and Cultural Updates section on the Supersite, which appears at the end of the list of ten lessons in Content > Activities. Links to authentic articles or videos with carefully scaffolded activities are added monthly from September to May, and all postings are archived for easy, continued access. Assign as homework or present in class for discussion, and customize the activities as you see fit. S39
