IMAGINA SIXTH EDITION - PROGRAM SAMPLER

IAE-40 TEACHING WITH IMAGINA Suggestions for Using Estructuras and Manual de gramática Grammar Explanations • Have students read the explanations at home and come to class with any questions. Explain the grammar in Spanish and try to keep explanations to a minimum, about five to ten minutes for each point. Grammar explanations should be assigned for homework so that class time can be devoted to the Práctica and Comunicación activities. • Introduce new grammar in context, using short narrations, guided discussions, brief readings, or realia. Call on students to share what they already know about each grammar point. • Use other sections of the text to introduce or reinforce grammatical concepts. Pause the Cortometraje film to discuss uses of each grammatical structure, or have students jot down examples as they watch. Have students take notes of key grammatical structures as they read the Cultura and Literatura selections. Práctica, Comunicación, and Síntesis • The Práctica exercises can be done orally as class, pair, or group activities. They may also be assigned as written homework. • Activities marked with a mouse icon are also available on the Supersite with auto grading, or they can be submitted online for instructor grading. These activities may be assigned as homework; depending on students’ success rate, devote additional time to the explanation or to extra Práctica activities before moving on to Comunicación. • Insist on the use of Spanish for all pair and group activities. • Have students form pairs or groups quickly, or assign them yourself for variety. Allow sufficient time for Comunicación activities (between five and ten minutes), but do not give students too much time or they may lapse into English and socialize. Always give students a time limit for an activity before they begin. • Circulate around the room to answer questions and keep students on task. • Encourage students to complete additional practice on the Supersite to assess what they have learned. • Use Síntesis activities to review all three grammar points and to make connections with the theme, vocabulary, and culture of the lesson. Encourage debate and open discussion. Manual de gramática • Point out the references to related Manual de gramática topics in the Taller de consulta sidebars of the student text. The supplemental grammar points may be presented sequentially, in conjunction with the Estructuras section of each lesson, or you may pick and choose from the topics covered as individual and class needs arise. • Assign the activities for online completion. • When grading writing assignments, refer students to Manual de gramática topics in response to common errors or individual concerns. Have students use the Manual de gramática as a tool for revision or when editing one another’s work. S38
