Suggestions for Using Contenido and Para empezar Lesson Theme and Vocabulary • Use the title, photo, and text on the lesson opening page as a springboard to introduce the themes and vocabulary of the lesson. Use the discussion questions in the introductory paragraph and Preview annotation for pair, group, or class activities. • Allow time for students to scan the table of contents and flip through the pages of each lesson, much as they would a magazine. Have students point out sections that appeal to them, and briefly describe the cultural and thematic content of each lesson. • To prepare students for new material, have them review what they already know about each theme by brainstorming related vocabulary words they have already learned. • Introduce the new vocabulary by describing words and categories, then asking students yes/no or multiple-choice questions. • Introduce the new vocabulary using Total Physical Response (TPR) or interactive class games such as Charades, Pictionary, and Hangman. • Tell students that they will see some of the vocabulary in the context of a short film, and ask them to look at the vocabulary and predict what they think the short film might be about. • Use the lab materials in class to introduce vocabulary and develop listening skills, or assign lab and workbook activities for extra practice outside of class. Práctica • The Práctica exercises can be done orally as class, pair, or group activities. Selected pair activities may also be completed online as Partner Chat activities. They may also be assigned as written homework. • Insist on the use of Spanish during pair and group activities. Encourage students to use the language creatively. • Have students form pairs or groups quickly. Assign or rotate partners and group members as necessary to ensure a greater variety of communicative exchanges. • Allow sufficient time for pair and group activities (between five and ten minutes depending on the activity), but do not give students too much time or they may lapse into English and socialize. Always give students a time limit for an activity before they begin. • Circulate around the room and monitor students to make sure they are on task. Provide guidance as needed and note common errors for future review. • Remind students to jot down information during pair and group discussion activities so that they can report the results to the class. • Encourage students to practice more online on the Supersite.
