STRUCTURES ESPACE UNITÉ 4 Au café cent soixante-cinq 165 4A.1 The verb aller Point de départ In Leçon 1A, you saw a form of the verb aller (to go) in the expression ça va. Now you will use this verb, first, to talk about going places and, second, to express actions that take place in the immediate future. aller je vais tu vas il/elle/on va I go you go he/she/it/one goes nous allons vous allez ils/elles vont we go you go they go • The verb aller is irregular. Only the nous and vous forms resemble the infinitive. Tu vas souvent au cinéma? Do you go to the movies often? Nous allons au marché le samedi. We go to the market on Saturdays. Je vais à la piscine. I’m going to the pool. Vous allez au parc? Are you going to the park? • Aller can also be used with another verb to tell what is going to happen. This construction is called le futur proche (the immediate future). Conjugate aller in the present tense and place the other verb’s infinitive form directly after it. Nous allons déjeuner sur la terrasse. We’re going to eat lunch on the terrace. Marc et Julie vont explorer le centre-ville. Marc and Julie are going to explore downtown. Je vais partager la pizza avec ma copine. I’m going to share the pizza with my friend. Elles vont retrouver Guillaume à la boîte de nuit. They’re going to meet Guillaume at the nightclub. • To negate an expression in le futur proche, place ne/n’ before the conjugated form of aller and pas after it. Je ne vais pas oublier la date. I’m not going to forget the date. Nous n’allons pas quitter la maison. We’re not going to leave the house. Tu ne vas pas manger au café? Aren’t you going to eat at the café? Ousmane ne va pas retrouver Salima au parc. Ousmane is not going to meet Salima at the park. • Note that le futur proche can be used with the infinitive of aller to mean going to go (somewhere). Elle va aller à la piscine. She’s going to go to the pool. Vous allez aller au gymnase ce soir? Are you going to go to the gym tonight? Je vais t’aider à trouver le restaurant parfait! Quand est-ce que tu vas dîner avec Anya? À noter In Leçon 2A, you learned how to form questions with inversion when you have a conjugated verb + infinitive. Follow the same pattern for le futur proche. Example: Théo va-t-il déjeuner à midi? The preposition à • The preposition à can be translated in various ways in English: to, in, at. When followed by the definite article le or les, the preposition à and the definite article contract into one word. à + le au à + les aux Nous allons au magasin. We’re going to the store. Ils parlent aux profs. They speak to the professors. • The preposition à does not contract with la or l’. à + la à la à + l’ à l’ Je rentre à la maison. I’m going back home. Il va à l’épicerie. He’s going to the grocery store. • The preposition à often indicates a physical location, as with aller à and habiter à. However, it can have other meanings depending on the verb used. Verbs with the preposition à commencer à + [infinitive] parler à to start (doing something) to talk to penser à téléphoner à to think about to phone (someone) Elle va parler au professeur. She’s going to talk to the professor. Il commence à travailler demain. He starts working tomorrow. • In general, à is used to mean at or in, whereas dans is used to mean inside or within.
