Say: These students are in order. The number words we use to show order are called ordinal numbers. Next have Student 1 repeat first, Student 2 second, Student 3 third, and Student 4 fourth. Amplify Point out the root word in ordinal and its association with order. Remind students that parts of words (in this case the root) can offer clues to word meaning. Ask students for other instances when ordinal numbers are used. (floors in a building) Offer a sentence frame if needed: My math class is on the floor. Reading strategy: Use headings • Use prereading supports Teach the reading strategy explicitly. Point to a heading and trace your finger underneath. Say: This strategy is a special way to help you understand. Headings are at the beginning of a section. They help you find information. They tell you what each section is about. Discover the world of math Skim all headings in the math section (pages 34–37). Read each heading together chorally. Ask: What information do you think is in this section? What word(s) in the heading tell you that? Academic vocabulary • Use the vocabulary routine to teach the words mathematics (math), solve, quantity, measurement, and relationships. Add these terms to the academic word wall. • Culture note Some international students may be familiar with the shortcut word maths. In the United States, the term is math. Do you know these numbers? Ask: Are these numbers the same or different than the numbers on page 34? Say: These are ordinal numbers. An ordinal number tells the position or order. Ordinal numbers are also used for fractions, dates, floor numbers, street names, birthdays (seventeenth birthday), etc. 65
