After you model your own example, you may still need to provide ELs sentence frames to complete the task. Their stories can have simple structures with short sentences. Amplify Encourage students to include new words in their story so they can push their linguistic skills. Provide other options for students to present their writing. For example, they can create a video or digital presentation. Formative Assessment • Read and talk: Checking with a friend Have a friend read your story. You read your friend’s story. Use the checklist for your friend’s story. Your friend uses the checklist for your story. Compare your checklists. Plan • Read aloud the sentences for Plan and elaborate. Say: Before you write a story, you organize your ideas. A storyboard can help. • Say: You can take notes in a storyboard. Think about what you said you know about school. Think about a class you can write about. Pedro writes about his science class. Write your class in the first box. Think about what happens in that class. In the model, the students and teachers meet. Who is in the classroom in your story? What do they do? Look back at the science, social studies, math, and electives pages for some ideas. Write some words or phrases to use in your story. Do not worry about spelling or punctuation. You are creating a draft of your story. A draft is not perfect. You can fix your draft in the next step.
