Make a list of your first names and last names. English Class List Teacher: Mrs. Carter Students: First name Last name Jamal Abadi Martina Blanco Lin Chen Farouk Farah Ana Flores Jorge Hernández Jia Kim Nicolas Silva Alejandra Vegas 5 Meet your classmates. • Stand up. Walk around the room. • Say hello to three students. • Ask their first and last names. • Ask how to spell their names. • Write down the names. • Say good-bye. • Sit down. Work with a classmate. Tell your classmate the names of the three students. Unit 1 | f ifteen 15 Unit 1 | 15 Social Studies Electives Writing | f ifteen DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Have students recite the alphabet orally and then closely read the last names in the English Class List. Write the first three examples on the board: Jamal Abadi, Martina Blanco, and Lin Chen. Use color for the A in Abadi (or underline it), the B in Blanco, and the C in Chen. Say: A, B, C. These last names are in alphabetical order. Have students say their own first and last names orally. Have them say what letter their last name begins with. Culture note For students who have more than one last name, American institutions usually use the first letter of the first of the two last names for the alphabetical order. Offer an example: For Ana Maria Martínez Hernández, the school will list her primary last name as Martínez, and she will be in alphabetical order under M, not H. Amplify Invite students to spell their last names. Have them line up in alphabetical order by last name before writing the list of their classmates’ first and last names. UNIT 1 / CONNECT TO LANGUAGE IN ACTION Reading strategy: Predict • Be explicit about the reading strategy. Begin with a concrete example to illustrate it. Walk over to the light switch in the classroom. Gesture as if you will turn it off. Ask: What happens if I flip this switch? (The lights will turn off.) Tell the class they have just predicted what will happen. They used what they already know to think about what will happen next. • Add the word predict to the academic word wall. English Class List Point out the reading strategy and read it aloud. Say: Predict. This is an English Class List. Turn and talk to another student and predict what is the reading about. Locate language with visually supported text Read the English class list aloud or play the audio. Have students follow along silently. Point to the columns and have students chorally read the title (“English Class List”), the teacher’s name (Mrs. Carter), and the columns (First name, Last name). Point out that the last names are in alphabetical order by last name. Make statements to propel discussion Use the chart in Activity 3 as a model. Write a chart with the same columns on the board. Show students how to begin. Call two students to the front of the class. Write their first and last names on the board. Ask: Which name do I write first in the chart? Why? Go over the initial letters to confirm the alphabetical order (based on last name). Write the names correctly in the chart. Write on the board or project the directions for Activity 5. Model the steps in the activity. Act out walking around the room. Go up to one student. Ask: What is your first name? What is your last name? Can you please spell that? Write down what they say on a piece of paper. Say: Good-bye! Tell students they will do this with a total of three people.
