Say: Hi! in an animated way. • Ask students to share how to say Hello in their home language. Gesture toward a student you know speaks a specific language, such as Spanish. Say: Hi! Point to yourself. Then gesture toward him or her and say: Hola! (e.g., Chào in Vietnamese, Salaam alaykum in Somali, etc.) Use the languages represented in your classroom. Unit goals In this unit, students will use viewing, active listening, oral language, reading, and writing to practice greetings. They will also read introductions to various academic subjects. Theme-related vocabulary Let students discover the following terms in context as they arise: boy, girl, teacher, name, spell, look, say, listen, read, write, repeat, writing, online. Add the terms to the academic word wall and have students add them to their vocabulary log. Introduce the theme • Say: Introductions. Point to yourself. Say: I am the teacher. Point to several students. Say: Student as you point to each one. Have a boy stand. Ask: Boy? Girl? Say: Boy. Have a girl stand. Ask: Boy? Girl? Say: Girl. Point to yourself again. Say: Hi! My name is . I am the teacher. • Culture note Be sensitive to gender identity and how students self-identify. Critical viewing • Match labels to photos Direct students’ attention to the photo. Say: I see a girl. I see a boy. Point to each and have students point to them. Point to the words Look and say and mimic looking and speaking. Have students complete the look-and-say activity. • Have students view the unit goals. Point out each icon. Have students repeat each term. Add them to the word wall and include the icon. Connect to the theme Play the video and ask students to say what they see so you can determine what they already know. Hi! What’s your name? Have students repeat the question. Point to yourself. Say: My name is . Have volunteers answer the question. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold The silent period is common for newcomers. Do not pressure students to speak immediately. They can gesture (such as waving) and use their home language as an initial greeting. Ask yes/no or single-answer questions such as Is this a boy? Is this a girl? Who is this? (boy/girl) When viewing the icons, be aware that you may have SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) who may not have been exposed to these subjects. Ask: Did you study language arts? Science? Social studies? Math? Did you take electives? There may be students who do not understand what you are asking, so point to pictures in the book and use gestures as much as possible. Amplify Invite students who have greater proficiency to say more about what they see in the photo. They may discuss clothing, where the students are, or what they’re doing. Prompt students for more language. Ask: Where are they? How do they feel? How do you know? When closely viewing the icons, be aware that you may have students who were advanced in one or more of these subject areas in their previous school and who know a lot about it in their home language. Ask: Did you study language arts? Science? Social studies? Math? Did you take electives? Have you ever written something or posted anything online? UNIT 1 31
