Autism According to the National Institute for Mental Health, autism spectrum disorder is a “neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.” A spectrum is a range of values. The word was used first to describe a rainbow, which is the range of colors that you may see in the sky after it rains. People with autism are as varied as the colors of the rainbow. Because their behavior may be different from other people’s, they are often labeled in negative ways. You are going to watch a video about a family that refuses to be limited by labels. Conversación Talk with a classmate about these questions. 1. The video starts by saying that it bothers Paola Muñiz when people say her son lives “en su propio mundo” because he’s autistic.
