142 Teacher’s Edition • Lesson Three EXPANSION Section Goals In Lectura, students will: • learn to use context clues in reading • read context-rich selections about Hispanic families Skill Categories 1 2 3 4 Student Resources Online Activities Interpretive Reading: Estrategia Tell students that they can often infer the meaning of an unfamiliar Spanish word by looking at the word’s context and by using common sense. Context clues include synonyms, antonyms, clarifications, definitions, and additional details. Have students read the sentence Ayer fui a ver a mi tía abuela, la hermana de mi abuela from the letter. Point out that the meaning of tía abuela can be inferred from its similarity to the known word abuela and from the clarification that follows (la hermana de mi abuela). Examinar el texto Have students read Paragraph 1 silently, without looking up the glossed words. Point out the phrase salgo a pasear and ask a volunteer to explain how the context might give clues to the meaning. Afterward, point out that salgo is the first-person singular form of salir (to go out ). Tell students they will learn all the forms of salir in Lección 4. Examinar el formato Guide students to see that the photos and captions reveal that the paragraphs are about several different families. Pre-AP® Pre-AP® Extra Practice Ask students to use the paragraphs in Así es mi familia as models for writing paragraphs about their families, but from the perspective of another family member (e.g., their mother). Have volunteers read their paragraphs aloud. Extra Practice Use these items, each of which contains an unfamiliar word or phrase, to practice using context clues. 1. Mi tío Daniel es maestro en una escuela secundaria; enseña ciencias. 2. No, Daniel no es antipático, ¡es un cariño! 3. Por favor, ¿tienes un boli o un lápiz? Te escribo su número de teléfono. Lectura Antes de leer Estrategia Guessing meaning from context As you read in Spanish, you’ll often come across words you haven’t learned. You can guess what they mean by looking at the surrounding words and sentences. Look at the following text and guess what tía abuela means, based on the context. If you guessed great-aunt, you are correct, and you can conclude from this word and the format clues that this is a letter about someone’s visit with his or her great-aunt. Examinar el texto Quickly read through the paragraphs and find two or three words you don’t know. Using the context as your guide, guess what these words mean. Then glance at the paragraphs where these words appear and try to predict what the paragraphs are about. Examinar el formato Look at the format of the reading.
