136 Teacher’s Edition • Lesson Three TEACHING OPTIONS EXPANSION Section Goals In Estructura 3.4, students will: • learn the present tense forms of tener and venir • learn several common expressions with tener Student Resources Cuaderno de actividades, pp. 77–79 Online Activities, eCuaderno Teacher Resources Workbook TEs; Grammar Slides; Audio Activities online; Audio Script; Assessment Program Quizzes; Activity Pack; Middle School Activity Pack Teaching Tips • Model tener by asking volunteers questions. Ex: ¿Tienes una familia grande? ¿Tienes hermanos? ¿Cuántos tíos tienes? ¿Tienes muchos primos? Point out that students have been using forms of tener since the beginning of the lesson. • Point out that the yo form of tener is irregular and ends in -go. Begin a paradigm for tener by writing tengo on the board. Ask volunteers questions that elicit tengo such as: Tengo una pluma, ¿quién tiene un lápiz? • Write tienes, tiene, tienen in the paradigm. Point out that in the tú, usted, and ustedes forms, the -e- of the verb stem changes to -ie-. • Write tenemos in the paradigm and point out that this form is regular. • Follow the same procedure to present venir. Have students give you the nosotros forms of beber and escribir for comparison. Pairs Have students work in pairs to create a short conversation in which they use forms of tener, venir, and other -er/-ir verbs they know. Tell them their conversations should involve the family and should include some descriptions of family members. Have pairs role-play their conversations for the class. Extra Practice For further practice with the conjugation of tener and venir, first write a sentence on the board and have students say it. Then say a new subject and have students repeat the sentence, substituting the new subject and making all necessary changes. Ex: Yo tengo una familia grande. (Ernesto y yo, usted, tú, ellos) Claudia y Pilar vienen a la clase de historia. (nosotras, Ernesto, ustedes, tú) Present tense of tener and venir The verbs tener (to have) and venir (to come) are among the most frequently used in Spanish. Because most of their forms are irregular, you will have to learn each one individually. The endings are the same as those of regular -er and -ir verbs, except for the yo forms, which are irregular: tengo, vengo. In the tú, Ud., and Uds. forms, the e of the stem changes to ie, as shown below. INFINITIVE VERB STEM VERB FORM tener ten- tú tienes Ud./él/ella tiene Uds./ellos/ellas tienen venir ven- tú vienes Ud./él/ella viene Uds./ellos/ellas vienen Only the nosotros and vosotros forms are regular. Compare them to the forms of comer and escribir that you learned on page 132. nosotros/as tenemos comemos venimos escribimos vosotros/as tenéis coméis venís escribís tener comer venir escribir 3.4 ANTE TODO tener venir yo tengo vengo tú tienes vienes Ud./él / ella tiene viene nosotros/as tenemos venimos vosotros/as tenéis venís Uds./ellos/ellas tienen vienen PLURAL FORMS SINGULAR FORMS The verbs tener and venir Use what you already know about regular -er and -ir verbs to identify the irregularities in tener and venir. 1) Which verb forms use a regular stem?
