Write trabajo on the board and ask for the corresponding subject pronoun. (yo) Continue until you have the entire paradigm. Underline the endings, pointing out the characteristic vowel (-a-) where it appears and the personal endings. • Ask questions and make statements that use the verb comer to elicit all the present-tense forms. Ex: ¿Comes en la cafetería o en un restaurante? Yo no como en la cafetería. ¿Come ____ en casa? As you elicit responses, write just the verbs on the board until you have the complete conjugation. Repeat the process with escribir. Ex: ¿Quién escribe muchos mensajes de texto? ¿A quién escribes? When you have a complete paradigm of both verbs, contrast it with the paradigm of trabajar. Heritage Speakers Have heritage speakers make statements about themselves or their family members, using different verbs from the chart on page 133. Some statements should be true and others should be false. Have the class guess which statements are true and encourage them to ask follow-up questions. Game Divide the class into two teams. Name an infinitive and a subject pronoun (Ex: creer/yo) and have a member of team A give the appropriate conjugation. If the student answers correctly, team A gets one point. If he or she is incorrect, give a member of team B the same items. If that student doesn’t know the answer, say the correct form and start over with a new infinitive and subject pronoun. The team with the most points at the end wins. -Er and -ir verbs have very similar endings. Study the preceding chart to detect the patterns that make it easier for you to use them to communicate in Spanish. Present tense of -er and -ir verbs In Lección 2, you learned how to form the present tense of regular -ar verbs.
