Perspectivas: A Cultural Approach Designed with the contemporary Intermediate Spanish classroom in mind, Vista Higher Learning’s Perspectivas program invites your students to make meaningful connections with diverse cultural practices, products, and perspectives. Students continue to develop the sociolinguistic skills essential to lifelong learning while fostering intercultural understanding that is indispensable to today’s increasingly interconnected global citizen. Every section of every lesson of Perspectivas aligns with the principles of the ACTFL 21st-century classroom. Today’s language classroom can only follow these principles if students interact with the perspectives of other cultures by examining them through the filter of their own culture. Furthermore, for students to develop meaningful global competence when learning a language, they need to be at the center of the approach and, thus, active participants of their own experience. In Perspectivas, a broad range of activities develops communicative competence and challenges students to think critically through personalized, real-world tasks that help them build intercultural competence with themselves, their community, and world perspectives. These activities build on one another with an emphasis on exposing students to authentic content from diverse genres, such as documentary videos, informational articles and literature, and audio, thereby inspiring them to communicate in Spanish through the perspectives of native speakers. Perspectivas activities emphasize all modes of communication, including intercultural communication—throughout each lesson. Students discover multiple ways of expressing themselves both orally and in writing. They improve their ability to convey meaning through a consistent pattern of activities that stresses personalization, intercultural exploration, and vocabulary and grammar support. Furthermore, scaffolded activities prepare students to interact with authentic video, text, and audio as well as allow for varied analysis and discussion after the interaction. Therefore, the activities serve as a bridge for students to access content and create habitual strategies for developing biliteracy skills. Perspectivas gives students the tools they need to attain the global classroom objectives of exploring diverse cultural perspectives by reflecting on their related practices and products. In the process, students improve their Spanish proficiency while becoming lifelong learners and global citizens. IAE-5 S3
