They can check their inferences at the end of the reading. Do they tend to infer correctly? These inferences can make book reports, summaries, and other follow-up activities much easier, which means that the reading strategy can be used in other classes as well. Preparation • Review the reading tips presented in previous units: recognizing cognates, scanning for the main ideas of the text, and visualizing images. Call students’ attention to the text of the left side of the page (Reading Strategy) and read it aloud to the class. Making inferences is the detective work a reader does to learn what the text implies, using reasonable assumptions and connections from the clues in the reading. • Introduce the reading and remind the class that the Inti Raymi is a festival of the sun celebrated during the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.
