To make inferences about a word or a topic, you can use clues from the text, the images, and your prior knowledge. Festividad inca del Inti Raymi LECTURA 248 doscientos cuarenta y ocho Unit 4 248 LECTURA DEVELOPING LEARNERS • Have students infer the meaning of the following words from the reading: 1. ubicación (location) 2. solsticio (solstice) 3. cuzqueños (people from Cuzco) 4. clima (climate) EXPANDING LEARNERS • The Inti Raymi is the Festival of the Sun, celebrated on or near the winter solstice, between June 20 and June 24 (because Peru is in the Southern Hemisphere). The winter solstice, celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere in December, is the shortest day of the year and marks the beginning of lengthening daylight of spring. It is commonly a time of celebrations and festivals throughout the world. Why might this be such an important time of year? • Have students research similarities between winter festivals in various cultures. Differentiated Instruction Presentation • In this section, students will learn about and practice making inferences as a reading strategy. In addition, they will learn about the Inti Raymi, an Incan festival celebrated every year in Sacsayhuaman, Peru. Cultural Topics • El Inti Raymi. The Inti Raymi celebration was described by El Inca Garcilaso (1539−1616), a Peruvian historian and writer. His detailed description of the Incan Empire is considered by many scholars to be the most accurate. The Spaniards banned the Inti Raymi festival during the colonial period, but Garcilaso’s writings about the festival were used in 1944 to revive the tradition, and the Inti Raymi has again become an annual celebration. Today, the Inti Raymi is one of the largest celebrations in South America, attracting thousands of visitors for the main events. The reenactment of the Emperor’s rituals occurs in Sacsayhuaman, just outside of Cuzco. The extensive stone walls of the ruins with tightly fitting boulders make an impressive setting for the festival, held on June 24 every year. The winter solstice is marked by festivals, rituals, or other celebrations in many cultures all over the world as a symbol of rebirth. Activating Prior Knowledge • Ask students to write six sentences telling what a tourist has to buy and / or take along if he or she plans to visit Peru during their mild winter season in June. For example: Un(a) turista tiene que llevar guantes (bufanda, botas, pantalones largos, gorro). Teaching Suggestions Inti Raymi Celebración del Inti Raymi Lugar y fecha Región: Cuzco.
