Pronombres de objeto indirecto El objeto indirecto • Many verbs with a direct object have a complement that indicates for whom the action is performed or who benefits from it. This complement is the indirect object (IO). The indirect object can be a noun with the preposition a (a Juan) or a pronoun (nos). Ana compra una camisa a Juan. El chef nos prepara la comida. • Sometimes for emphasis or for clarification, we use two indirect objects in the same sentence—an expression with the preposition a (a mí, a Carlos) and the pronoun. A mí me gusta mucho el ceviche. A Carlos le gusta el jugo de naranja. Pronombres de objeto indirecto • Indirect object pronouns are the same as those used with the verb gustar: P Singular Plural me te le to me to you (informal) to him, to her, to you (formal) nos os les to us to you (informal) to them, to you • Indirect object pronouns are placed before the conjugated verb or are attached to the infinitive, like the direct object pronouns. Carlos me trae el desayuno. ¿Puedes traernos la carta, por favor? 58. Piensa. Why do you think that in Spanish you can sometimes use two indirect objects— a pronoun and an expression with the preposition a? Can you do the same in English? DO IO IOP DO IO IOP IO IOP Gramática DESAFÍO 3 230 doscientos treinta Unit 4 230 DESAFÍO 3 DEVELOPING LEARNERS • Start a chain drill in class. Each person tells someone else that they are buying him or her an ice cream (or other food). The person responds by saying thank you and repeating who is buying him or her the ice cream. Ana: Carlos, te compro un helado. Ca rlos: Gracias. Mira, Juan, Ana me compra un helado. Te compro un helado. Ju an: Gracias. Mira, Lucía, Carlos me compra un helado. Te compro un helado. • Students continue the chain, and may vary the text using other words that they have learned (clothing, utensils, school supplies). EXPANDING LEARNERS • As students are completing the Developing Learners activity, or after it has been completed, have them write who buys whom the ice creams. They can take notes as the activity progresses, or see who can remember the most. For example: La profesora le compra un helado a Carlos. • Point out that le can apply to both a boy and a girl. For that reason, we clarify each statement with a Beatriz or a Carlos. Activating Prior Knowledge • Ask students to write six sentences saying what the following people like, using gustar: a Janet y a Andy, a ti, a la Sra. Vega, a vosotras, a mí, and a nosotros. Then have them underline the word that immediately precedes the form of gustar. Preparation • Go over the grammar presentation and the examples. Explain the reasons why le and les require clarification: le can refer to a él, a ella, and a usted, and les can refer to a ellos, a ellas, and a ustedes, not to mention the objects that might be nouns or proper nouns instead of pronouns. Tell them that the preposition a must precede each person named: les  a Teresa y a su mamá. Activities 58. Answer: In Spanish, the indirect object pronoun is required. The redundant information (a mí, a ti, a ella, etc.) is for emphasis or clarification. No, you can’t. 59. Audio script: –Quiero celebrar nuestra experiencia en Perú. Les preparo a todos un desayuno peruano, ¿de acuerdo? –¡Sí! ¡Qué bien! –A ver... Janet, ¿quieres unos frijoles? Los peruanos a veces comen frijoles para el desayuno. –¡Sí, qué ricos! –Y para beber, ¿leche? –Sí, por favor. –Pues yo también quiero leche. ¿Todos queremos beber leche? –Sí.
