Additional Practice Online Fans Online Activities Cuaderno de práctica El cuy peruano The word cuy is the Spanish version of quwi in Quechua, the language of the Inca Empire in South America. These guinea pigs were domesticated for food in the Andes over 7,000 years ago. The Moche people of ancient Peru used the image of the cuy in their art. Traditionally the meat of the cuy was used in ceremonial meals, but it has become more socially accepted as a daily source of protein. It is served fried, broiled, or roasted. Peruvians consume over 60 million guinea pigs a year. Have students bring in a full place setting made of plastic or paper. • They label the back or bottom of each item with the word in Spanish, using a permanent marker. • Students can shuffle through the objects as though they were flashcards. You can also have students bring in their place settings to use in improvised conversation scenes, and allow them to refer to the bottom if they get stuck on a word.
