(I was sleepy.) J’ai eu sommeil. (I got sleepy.) • Contrast again the uses of the passé composé and imparfait by giving personalized examples of things you and/ or your family did yesterday versus things you and your family used to do when you were young. Examples: Hier soir, je suis allée au centre commercial. Quand j’étais petite, je jouais au foot. Then make two columns on the board, one labeled Hier, je/j’… and the other labeled Quand j’étais petit(e)… Have volunteers take turns writing complete sentences about themselves under each column. • As you compare the passé composé and the imparfait, have students focus on the pronunciation of these tenses. You might have them practice the following sentences: J’ai travaillé. / Je travaillais. Il parlait. / Il a parlé. Tu allais. / Tu es allé(e). Elle chantait. / Elle a chanté. • Follow the Extra Practice suggestion on p. 129. Essayez! Have students explain why they chose the passé composé or the imparfait for each of their responses. Whole Class Make cards that contain a verb or noun and an expression that signals a past tense. Example: hier / parc or Quand j’étais jeune / voyager. Mix them up and have students pick a card at random. Then have each student state the cues on his or her card and say which tense he or she will use before formulating a sentence in either the passé composé or the imparfait. Groups Have students work together to pick a popular holiday and write a few sentences in the past tense to describe it. Students might talk about typical activities they did that day, the weather, or how they felt on that day. Then, have them share their description with the class without revealing the holiday and have their classmates guess what holiday it is.
