Point out rooms and furnishings in the illustration. Examples: Ça, c’est la salle de bains. Voici un canapé. • Ask students questions about their homes using the new vocabulary. Examples: Habitezvous dans une maison ou dans un appartement? Avez-vous un balcon? Un garage? Combien de salles de bains avez-vous? • Explain that une chambre is a bedroom, but une pièce is the generic term for a room. • Explain that un salon is a more formal room used primarily for entertaining guests. Generally, it is not used for watching television or other leisure activities. Une salle de séjour is a more functional room, similar to an American family room or den. • Point out that un studio is a studio apartment, usually equipped with a couch that converts into a bed and a kitchenette. Tell students that an artist’s studio is un atelier. Successful Language Learning Suggest to students that they study vocabulary words in varying order to avoid relying on the order itself to help them remember. Point out that words at the beginning and the end of lists tend to be easier to recall than those in the middle. Whole Class Ask students what activities they do in various rooms. Examples: Dans quelle pièce… mangez-vous? étudiezvous? dormez-vous? faites-vous la cuisine? travaillez-vous sur l’ordinateur? parlez-vous au téléphone? Kinesthetic Learners Make signs for various rooms in a house and for other parts of a home, such as le garage or le balcon. Also make several signs for bedrooms and bathrooms. Distribute the signs to students. As other students describe their homes (one floor at a time), those holding signs arrange themselves according to the descriptions. Tell students to use prepositions of location in their descriptions.
