Let’s now introduce the verb faire used to express what we are doing. • Like other commonly used verbs, the verb faire (to do, to make) is irregular in the present tense. Je fais… Then, using the 5A Contextes illustration from the Digital Image Bank, ask what people in the image are doing. • Write the forms of faire on the board as students hear them in your questions. If tu and nous forms are missing, complete the conjugation by asking a student: Tu fais tes devoirs? Then ask: Qu’est-ce que nous faisons? (Nous apprenons/ faisons nos devoirs.) • Ask students where they have seen the -s, -s, -t pattern. (boire: je bois, tu bois, il/elle boit) • Present expressions with faire using images or by miming the activities. • Tell students that the verb faire is also used in idiomatic expressions relating to math. Example: Trois et quatre font sept. Three plus four equals (makes) seven. Rapid Drill As a rapid-response drill, call out subject pronouns and have students respond with the correct form of faire. Examples: tu (fais) and vous (faites). Then reverse the drill; say the forms of faire and have students give the subject pronouns. Interpersonal Have students make a list of activities they usually do during a regular school term, and another list of activities they do during their vacation.
