Using the Illustration Bank and Creating Your Own Picture File Many language instructors find picture files useful for extending and varying practice of vocabulary groups or grammatical points. Aventuras has an illustration bank in the Digital Image Bank in which images are grouped by theme and correlated to the lessons. An easy way to assemble your own picture file is to get into the habit of looking for dramatic images as you browse the web or flip through magazines. Another way is to ask students to share illustrations or photos that appeal to them and that they would like to talk about. These materials can be mounted on posterboard, laminated, and filed in a box. The pictures can be arranged in various ways—by theme (for example, family, clothing, or pastimes), by grammatical topic (preterite vs. imperfect, descriptive adjectives, or the present subjunctive), or by textbook lesson. Suggestions for Using Preparación Lesson Vocabulary • Introduce the vocabulary using comprehensible input. • Use the lesson opener questions to preview the new vocabulary. • Ask multiple choice and yes/no questions about the images in the Preparación spread and in the Digital Image Bank. Use as many cognates as possible. • Make use of any other elements you might have in your classroom to preview recognition of the new vocabulary in a comprehensible way. A escuchar • If class time is limited, assign the A escuchar activities as homework (see A practicar suggestions), although it is advisable to do this section in class for the first few lessons so students develop good listening habits. • In the first few lessons, tell students that they should listen for general meaning and not worry about understanding every word they hear. • Before playing the recording, read the direction line to the class to set the scene and have students read through the exercise as a pre-listening activity. • If the recorded passage is long, allow students to take notes. • If students have difficulty completing the activity, play the recording for them again. A practicar • Use the Supersite (vhlcentral.com) to your advantage. • Assign as many of the A escuchar and A practicar activities as you choose as auto-graded homework on the Supersite. • Use class time for communicative practice and to go over problem areas.
