Teaching with Aventuras Orienting Students to the Student Textbook Since the interior and graphic design of Aventuras were created to support and facilitate students’ language learning experience, you may want to spend some time orienting students to the textbook on the first day of class. Have students flip through Lección 1, pointing out the major sections. Explain that all lessons are organized in the same manner, so students should always know “where they are” in the textbook. Emphasize that most sections are self-contained, occupying either a full page or a spread of two facing pages, which eliminates the need to flip back and forth to reference grammar explanations while completing activities. Call students’ attention to the use of color to highlight important information in charts, diagrams, and word lists. Also point out how the major sections of each lesson are color-coded for easy navigation: red for Preparación, blue for Aventuras, orange for Cultura, green for Gramática, and purple for Lectura. Then have students turn to the Aventuras en los países hispanos section that follows Lección 2. Explain that these sections cover different countries or regions of the Spanish-speaking world and that they appear every two lessons. Flexible Lesson Organization To meet the needs of diverse teaching styles and instructional objectives, Aventuras’ lesson organization is flexible. For example, if you do not want to devote class time to teaching grammar, you can assign the Gramática explanations for outside study, freeing up class time for other purposes like developing communicative skills, learning more about the Spanish-speaking world, or working with the video program. You might have students do the A escuchar in Preparación, Escuchar in Ampliación, and the Pronunciación sections in the language lab or at home. You may choose to skip some sections or use them only periodically, depending on students’ interests and time constraints. If you plan on using the Aventuras Testing Program, be aware that the tests and exams contain sections based on language presented in Preparación and Gramática. In the Seventh Edition, the Expresiones útiles from Aventuras are not part of the active vocabulary load that is tested. Identifying Active Vocabulary All words and expressions appearing with the illustrations and in the thematic lists in Preparación are active vocabulary. The words and expressions in charts, word lists, and sample sentences in Gramática are also active vocabulary. At the end of each lesson, Vocabulario provides a convenient one-page summary of the items students should know; these items may appear on assessments. To increase students’ lexicon, supplemental vocabulary lists for each lesson are available on the Supersite (vhlcentral.com); these may be distributed to the class. An Así se dice box in each Preparación spread and in each Cultura spread also provides information on lexical variations in Spanish. In both cases, these words and expressions are optional and not tested. IAE-41 teaching with Aventuras S39
