THE American Red Cross I t can be scary to experience a disaster, such as a flood, a tornado, or a hurricane. After these disasters, many people need help. The American Red Cross has provided this help since 1881. They respond to an emergency every eight minutes! That’s an average of 62,000 emergencies a year. Their motto is “Sleeves up. Hearts open. All in.” This means they will roll up their sleeves and get dirty while helping after disasters. Their hearts are open because they know people need compassion during difficult times. All emergency workers at the American Red Cross will do what it takes to help others. Sometimes people need to evacuate their homes for safety reasons. The American Red Cross provides shelters where people can be safe, warm, and dry. In addition, they provide food for the people staying in the shelters. Likewise, they provide first aid or other health services for people who need it. Some people who work at the American Red Cross are paid. However, others are volunteers. They don’t earn any money.
