Project | 3H UNIT 1 Suggestions UNIT 1 Project Meteorologist for the Day Students choose a type of weather, gather data about that type of weather, and present a weather forecast. Have students watch a weather forecast and discuss the information the reporter focused on (temperature, wind speed, precipitation, etc.). Students can work independently, with partners, or in small groups. They choose one weather condition to forecast—hurricane, tornado, monsoon, snowstorm, drought, or any extreme weather condition, then gather data about that type of weather. Resources for this project are: information in the Student Book unit, books in the Suggested Reading list, books from the school or public library about weather, and information from the internet. Each forecast should be written out as a script. The presentation should include: pictures or drawings of what the weather will look like, temperature, chance of precipitation, wind speed, humidity, suggested clothing for this type of weather, and activities people do in this type of weather. Remind students that during extreme weather conditions, a forecaster will often give the audience a warning or tips on how to prepare for the weather. Once the script is written, have students rehearse using props (umbrella, raincoat, sunglasses, ice scraper, etc.) from school or at home. Presentations can be pre-recorded and played for the class or presented live to the class.
