Double consonants Identify double consonants Review the concept of double consonants. Write the example word, rabbit, on the board. Have students spell the word chorally. Ellicit the expression double b as they spell. Say: In some words we repeat consonants. Ask: What do you notice about the vowel sound before the double consonant? (It’s a short vowel sound.) A Apply spelling knowledge Draw students’ attention to Activity A on Practice Book page 4. Have students identify each picture by calling out each word as you read aloud the numbers 1–6. Then have students work independently to complete each word by writing a double consonant. Call on volunteers to spell each word orally as students check their work. Have students chorally read the words in the box. Elicit the names of the double consonants in each word. Call on a volunteer to read sentence 1. Ask: What can you mix with sugar when cooking? Look in the word box. (butter) Have students complete the activity independently and then check their answers with a partner by taking turns to read each sentence aloud. Check answers as a class. Write the example sentence, What’s the matter with your rabbit?, on the board. Call on volunteers to identify the double-consonant words. Have students write their sentences. Then call on volunteers to share their sentences with the class. ANSWERS Student’s sentences should be complete and grammatically correct as well as contain two double-consonant words. D Identify double-consonant word meanings Draw students’ attention to Activity D on Practice Book page 5. Chorally read the words in the box. Call on a volunteer to read the example clue aloud. Elicit the answer. (tomorrow) Have students complete the activity independently. Check answers as a class. Call on volunteers to read each clue and their answer. Chorally spell each answer.
