Point to y and say: When you see a y at the end of a one-syllable word, like try and why, it is pronounced like a long i. But when you see a y at the end of a longer word, it is usually pronounced like a long e. Point to ey and say: These are the letters ey. When these two letters are stuck together, they make the long e sound. They usually come at the end of a syllable. Play the audio. Point to the pictures and say: Listen to these words: baby, key. Have children repeat. What vowel sound do you hear in both words? (/ē/) How is that sound spelled in these words? (y, ey) Practice A • Identify long vowel sounds Explain to children that they will hear and read pairs of words that all end with the letter y. They need to listen carefully and decode each word, paying attention to spelling clues that reveal pronunciation. They should then circle the word in each group that has the long e sound. Remind children to count syllables, if necessary. Model the example. Play the audio, decode, and read each word aloud, emphasizing the vowel sound. Say: Happy has the long e sound at the end. Try has the long i sound. Circle happy to indicate that it has a long e sound. Play the audio and have children complete the activity, reading each word aloud. Answers: 1. family 2. sunny 3. honey 4. monkey B • Decode words and identify long vowel sounds Explain to children that they will decode and read words that all end with the long e sound. They need to pay attention to spelling and choose the letters that make the long e sound. Model the example. Decode and read the word baby aloud, emphasizing the final vowel sound. Say: Baby is two syllables and has the long e sound at the end. It is spelled b, a, b, y. The letter y makes the long e sound. Circle y to indicate that it makes the long e sound. Have children complete the activity, decoding and reading each word aloud. Answers: 1. y 2. y 3. ey 4. y 5. ey 6. y Communicate C • Demonstrate knowledge of long vowel sounds Write y and ey on the board. Say: Think of some words you know that end with the long e sound spelled y or ey. Can you say a sentence with them? Model the example sentences in the book. Read them aloud, pointing out the words family, honey, hockey, and sunny. Then have children brainstorm words and say sentences on their own. Page P-125 Practice D • Spell words with long vowel sounds Explain to children that they should look at the picture, name what it shows, and then use the letters to spell that word. Write the letters ynsnu on the board. Then point to the example and say: The example shows the sun shining. Play the audio or say sunny aloud. Segment the word into individual sounds. Ask: What sounds do you hear in sunny? (/s/ /u/ /n/ /ē/) What letter makes the first sound, /s/? (s) Cross out the s in ynsnu and then write the letter s on the board. Repeat the process for unny, crossing out the letters you hear and adding to the word you are making on the board. Ask: How do you spell sunny? (s, u, n, n, y) How is the long e sound spelled at the end of sunny? (y) Play the audio and have children complete the activity, naming the pictures, saying each word aloud, and unscrambling the letters to spell each word correctly. Answers: 1. money 2. jelly 3. pony E • Write multisyllabic words with multiple sound-spellings Explain to children that they should read each word, write the word, and then draw a picture that represents the word. Model the activity. Point to honey, decode the word, and say: Honey has two syllables. The second syllable has the long e sound at the end. It is spelled ey. It’s spelled h, o, n, e, y. Write the word on the board. Then draw a simple picture of something that represents honey, such as a jar of honey, honey pot or beehive. Encourage children to be as creative as possible with their pictures. Listen to
