Some words are irregular and do not fit known soundspellings. Many of the words, however, can be sounded out. High-Frequency Word Routine 1: Read, Spell, Write, Extend This routine will help students learn high-frequency words that align with known sound-spellings as well as irregular words. Create and use highfrequency word cards to introduce each word. 1. Read the word and have students repeat the word. 2. Spell the word aloud and have students repeat. 3. Write the word, saying each letter aloud. Then have students write the word as they say each letter aloud. 4. Extend learning with engaging activities that encourage students to read, spell, and write the words as they work toward mastery. High-Frequency Word Routine 2: Sound Out Strategy This routine can be used to introduce and review irregularly spelled words that cannot be sounded out using known sound-spellings. 1. Identify the word as an irregular word. Tell students what the word is and say it aloud. 2. Emphasize the word’s irregularity by guiding students to sound out the word with you and apply common sound-spellings. 3. Then invite students to listen to the actual pronunciation of the word compared to the word that was sounded out. 4. Finally, point to your ear and say the correct word for emphasis. Provide additional words for guided practice. High-Frequency Word Routine 3: Flash Cards Create and use high-frequency word cards to review all known high-frequency words, do a spiral review, or focus on problematic high-frequency words. 1. Show each card and have students read it aloud. 2. If students show mastery, place the card in a discard pile. If they are unable to read the card within three seconds, say the word and have students repeat it. Place that card at the bottom of the stack to try again. READING Each lesson of Connect to Phonics PLUS features decodable texts with the lesson’s target soundspellings, word structures, and high-frequency words. Reading decodable texts solidifies students’ word reading skills and builds reading fluency. Reading Routine 1: Choral Read 1. Have students whisper read each page before choral reading. Explain that students can move their lips as they whisper each sentence. Encourage them to apply their decoding skills and ask for help if they get stuck. 2. Then guide students to read each page aloud with you. Model fluent reading with appropriate pace, intonation, and expression. Have students track the print as they read aloud with you. Reading Routine 2: Echo Read 1. Tell students to listen as you model how to read and make your voice sound natural. Read one to two sentences fluently. 2. Prompt students to read the same sentence(s) as they mimic the way you say the words. 3. Monitor students as they read and provide corrective feedback on misread words, explaining the appropriate decoding strategy. 4. Continue reading the book, one to two sentences or a page at a time, and modeling fluent reading. Reading Routine 3: Taking Turns Reading 1. Tell students you will take turns reading each page. Read the first page aloud. Model fluent reading and discuss decoding strategies that apply. 2. Invite each child to read a page aloud. If a child makes a mistake, allow time for self-correction. If a child does not self-correct, ask if what they read makes sense. Return to the sentence and discuss decoding strategies or read the sentence and have them echo.
