UNIT X UNIT 8 | 319 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Ask and answer: Recycled art Ask and answer in pairs: What are some items of trash that can be used in recycled art? Instructional Routine: Art p. Txxxiv Recycled Art A • Build background knowledge Display examples of recycled art. Ask: What do you notice about this art? Explain that all the art pieces are examples of recycled art, or art made from trash. • Learn content vocabulary Play the audio for students. Write From Pollution to Pictures on the board and ask if students recognize prepositional phrases. Underline each prepositional phrase. Say: Pollution is another word for trash. • Listen actively Point out the words in bold type and assess whether they are familiar to students. Then replay the audio as students follow along in a whisper read. Then have students reread the text in pairs. Remind them to use context to help them understand the words in bold type. • Use content vocabulary Have students describe what they see in the picture. Supply vocabulary if necessary. B Follow a sequence Ask a volunteer to read the instructions and choral read the steps. Provide access to photos of different works of recycled art. Have each student choose a photo to use as a model. Then direct students to follow the steps to create their 3-D recycled art. C Use academic language to share ideas Have two students demonstrate sharing and discussing recycled art. Then have students share and discuss their recycled art in small groups. Check in with students and supply vocabulary and sentence frames as needed. Your recycled art has a _____ texture. Essential Question: How can you recycle objects to make art? Have students discuss the Essential Question in pairs. Then ask them to share their answers with the class. ANSWERS Sample answer: You can paint recycled objects and glue them together. Practice Book p. 174 EXPLORE AND LEARN DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Support students in understanding the meaning of texture by passing around objects with varied texture (for example, sandpaper, cotton balls, and marbles). Ask: Feel the sandpaper. What texture does it have, rough, soft, or smooth? Continue with other objects. Then guide students to use the word texture to describe their own recycled art. Ask: When you touch your recycled art, what texture do you feel? Supply the sentence frame My recycled art has a _____ texture. Amplify Ask students to generate artist statements to accompany their recycled art. Statements should include a description of the items recycled as well as information about what texture the art has. Tell students to use evidence to explain their ideas (e.g., The texture of my art is mixed. The recycled items on the left are rough, but the items on the right are smooth). COMMUNICATE PRACTICE Recycled Art A Read the informational text. From Pollution to PICTURES Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang make art from plastic. They visit Kehoe Beach in northern California several times a year to hunt for interesting trash. They collect plastic that was littering the ocean and beach. They find many things, like combs, toys, and plastic packaging. They take the objects home. Then, they clean and sort the plastic objects by color. They recycle this trash to make jewelry, and 3-D (3-dimensional) objects such as sculptures. To present the 3-D art, the team of two puts the plastic objects together in interesting ways. A photographer takes pictures of the 3-D art. The photos go to galleries and museums. Their work helps people learn about plastic pollution. They want people to take better care of the oceans and the environment. B Make 3-D art from recycled objects. 1. Collect objects from home or school. You can use plastic objects or other things. 2. Clean the objects if needed. 3. Arrange the objects in an interesting way. 4. You can glue the objects together on paper. Or you can attach them together with glue, string, or tape. C Making connections Share your 3-D art with a classmate. What objects do you see in your classmate’s work?
