You may wish to bring in photos and illustrations of historic expeditions (Roald Amundsen’s expedition to the South Pole; Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s first expedition to the summit of Everest) to solidify understanding. Amplify Have students write an expedition proposal for a place they would like to explore. The proposal should include the location, the purpose of the expedition, and what the student hopes to learn. Allow students to research unfamiliar locations. Choose a familiar place and write a model to share with students. I propose an expedition of the city center to discover which restaurants serve the best dessert. My research shows there are more than 100 restaurants in the city center. My expedition will take several months to complete. PRACTICE Grammar in Action A Read the informational text. Exploring THE Northwest In 1803, the United States bought 828,000 square miles of land from France. This event was called the Louisiana Purchase. The land doubled the size of the new country. Thomas Jefferson was the president. He wanted a team of people to go on an expedition of the Louisiana Territory. The purpose was to find a Northwest Passage, a water route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Another purpose was to explore the land. The new settlers didn’t know what was there. The expedition of more than 50 men left St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804. The group sailed up the Missouri River. They explored the land, and they made maps of the land. The team reached the Pacific Ocean in the winter of 1805. Along the way, they found many plants and animals. These plants and animals were unknown to them. The group saw bears, hundreds of bird species, and a variety of other animals. The group of explorers never met their goal. They did not find the Northwest Passage. But they collected valuable information about wildlife and the land. B Use the vocabulary 1. What was the purpose of the expedition? 2. What was the Northwest Passage? Why was it important for the new settlers to find it? 3. What was successful about the expedition? What was not successful? Tutorial CONNECT TO Grammar UNIT 8 306 UNIT 8 / CONNECT TO GRAMMAR
