UNIT X 304 | UNIT 8 Instructional Routine: Grammar p. Txxviii Grammar in Action A • Understand genre Preview “Innovative Homes” with students. Tell them that it is an informational text. Say: The last text we read was an informational text. This is also an informational text. What does an informational text do? Discuss the question with students, reinforcing the idea that informational texts include facts that are always true. • Use text features to make a prediction Ask students to point out the text features. They should identify the title, the photos, and the words in bold type. Then have students predict what the text will be about. Ask: What is the title? What do you see in the photos? What are the words in bold type? What do you think this text is about? • Listen to media to build academic language Play the audio once, having students listen to gain a general understanding of the text without looking at the words. Then replay it, this time asking students to read along silently. Direct them to pay special attention to the words in bold type and their context. B • Use context to determine meaning On the board, write protected, trap, shelter, cave, wood, light. Point out that several of the words have multiple meanings. Model how to determine the meaning of the term light in this context. Say: In the sentence “Yurts are very light, so people could carry their homes with them,” the word light is a descriptive word. I know this because it follows the verb be and must describe the subject, yurt. Also, so tells us the reason why yurts are light. I can infer from this that light means to weigh very little. Have students work in pairs to discuss the other new words. • Use new vocabulary Have students analyze the photos and discuss the questions in pairs before writing their answers in complete sentences. Ask them to use the new vocabulary in their answers. ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. Igloos are made of snow. Igloos trap body heat. 2. People in the desert build cave homes. These homes protect them from the heat, sun, and wind. 3. A traditional Khmer house is made of wood and built on stilts. It protects people from floods. 4. A yurt is easy to carry because it is light. This is important because people in Mongolia had to move from place to place. EXPLORE AND LEARN DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Have students complete the writing activity in a small group. Review how to use context and visual clues to determine a new word’s meaning. Then model writing a sentence using one of the new vocabulary words. Say: We see photos of shelters. The story says, “In Tunisia, the Berber people needed shelter in the desert.” I’ll write People need shelter in the desert. Provide students with sentence frames to support their writing. Igloos _____ people from the cold. In the desert, people find shelter in _____. Yurts are _____, so people can move them easily. Amplify Extend the writing task by having students write sentences about other kinds of homes using all six vocabulary words. Sentences should focus on different kinds of shelter and use the same meanings of the vocabulary words that are used in “Innovative Homes.” PRACTICE Grammar in Action A Read the informational text. Different homes help people survive in different environments. The Inuit people invented igloos, or snow houses, hundreds of years ago. Igloos protected them from the cold in places like Alaska, Greenland, and Siberia. Igloos trap body heat. This heat makes the igloo 40 degrees warmer than the air outside. Today, Inuit people live in more modern homes, but they sometimes use igloos for hunting trips. In Tunisia, the Berber people needed shelter in the desert. They developed troglodyte homes, or cave homes. They dug holes in the ground for their homes. These human-made caves protect people from the heat, sunlight, and wind. Only a few people live in these homes today. The Khmer people in Cambodia made houses to protect against floods. They are traditional Khmer houses. They are made of wood. The Khmer houses are built on stilts, or tall poles. During floods, the water does not get into the houses. Many people in Cambodia still live in houses on stilts. People in Mongolia invented yurts thousands of years ago. They moved from place to place. Yurts are very light, so people could carry their homes with them. Today, people around the world live in modern yurts. There are also popular yurt hotels. Innovative Homes B Use the vocabulary 1. What is an igloo made of? How does it protect people from the cold? 2. What kind of shelter might people use in the desert? What does it protect people from? 3. What is a traditional Khmer house made of? What does it protect people from? 4. Why is a yurt easy to carry? Why was this important? igloo cave home Khmer house yurt Tutorial CONNECT TO Grammar UNIT 8 304 UNIT 8 / CONNECT TO GRAMMAR
