UNIT X 302 | UNIT 8 DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Have students create problem-solution graphic organizers. Play the audio again, pausing frequently so students can take notes in their organizers. Model how to listen and take notes in the first row. After students have finished taking notes, they can use the graphic organizer as support for Activity B. Amplify Have students use the information in their charts to write sentences. Instructional Routine: Oral Language p. Txxvii Listening Strategy: Listen for Solutions Review problem-solution words Direct students’ attention to the Listening Strategy box. Read aloud the information. Have students choral read the signal words. Tell students to listen for these words in the oral text. Podcast A • Preview illustrations Direct students to preview the illustration. Ask: What do you see? Have the students read the labels chorally and point to the images. • Listen actively Play the audio once for students to listen for general understanding. • Identify problem-solution words Replay the audio, this time asking students to listen for problem-solution words. Direct them to raise their hand every time they hear a problem-solution word or phrase. EXPLORE AND LEARN SCRIPT Steve: Hi! Welcome to my show—Steve’s Science Solutions. My question today is: What problems can we solve with space exploration? Today, I’m talking to my neighbor Ms. Chen. She’s not only my neighbor, she’s an astronaut! Welcome, Ms. Chen. Mrs. Chen: Thank you, Steve. Steve: Is it true that we explore Mars so people can live there one day? You know, if there’s not enough room for people on Earth in the future. Mrs. Chen: Well, we can learn a lot by exploring Mars, and people might travel there one day. However, space exploration can solve many other problems on Earth. In fact, space explorers have solved a lot of problems already. Steve: Really? Like what? Mrs. Chen: Well, about 50 years ago, astronauts discovered there was a hole in the ozone layer. They saw this problem from a spacecraft. It was very dangerous to our environment. Steve: How did they solve the problem? Mrs. Chen: The astronauts didn’t solve the problem. But because of their discovery, people on Earth made changes. We made laws so people had to stop doing certain things that were destroying the atmosphere. Today, the hole in the ozone is smaller. Unfortunately, we need to do a lot more to protect the environment. Steve: I agree. Are there any other “Earth problems” that space has solved? Mrs. Chen: Space exploration also helps us watch for natural disasters. We can see bad weather patterns from satellites in space and warn people on Earth. Steve: That must save a lot of lives! Mrs. Chen: Yes, it does. People can prepare for severe weather if they know it’s coming. Steve: That’s amazing. Anything else? Mrs. Chen: Oh, yes. The technology developed for space exploration has solved many medical problems. For example, because of space technology, we have laser eye surgery. Steve: Wow! That’s incredible! Mrs. Chen: It has also made life easier… we have cameras in cell phones and cordless tools because of space technology. It’s amazing that space exploration can save and improve lives right here on our planet. B Identify solutions to problems Have pairs use problem-solution words to identify the solutions in the audio and list them in their charts. ANSWERS Solutions: 1. laws to protect the environment, 2. satellites to observe weather patterns, 3. laser eye surgery SCRIPT (continued) PRACTICE atmosphere hole ozone layer astronaut satellite spacecraft LISTENING STRATEGY Listen for Solutions When you listen for a solution, you listen for information that tells you how a problem is solved. Listen for these words and phrases: because of made changes helps us prepare has solved made life easier Podcast Space Exploration A Listen to a podcast about space exploration. B Listen again. Complete the T-chart with important information about solutions. problem solution 1. a hole in the ozone layer 2. natural disasters 3. medical problems UNIT 8 302 CONNECT TO Oral Language UNIT 8 / CONNECT TO ORAL LANGUAGE
