UNIT X UNIT 8 | 285 Critical Viewing • Generate content vocabulary Give students time to closely view the photo and think of words to describe it. • Use visuals to develop vocabulary Point to vocabulary already on the word wall. Spiral back to words students have already used: invention, solar cell, greenhouse, power switch, recycle, green energy, recycle. Have students repeat each word and point to where it appears in the image. • Ask and answer Read each question aloud. Guide students to answer in complete sentences. • Interpret images Direct students’ attention to specific aspects of the photo by pointing to the boy, the posters, and the solar greenhouse. This will help them infer what the boy is talking about. To introduce question 3, say: This solar greenhouse is an invention. An invention is a kind of innovation. Use gestures to indicate building an invention and have students join you. If there is a greenhouse in your school or larger community, show students a photo or take them to see it. You may wish to build a windowsill greenhouse and have your students plant seeds so they can watch them grow throughout the unit. Radishes and scallions mature in just 3 weeks. ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. The boy is at school. I know because there is a blackboard. 2. He is explaining his invention. 3. His greenhouse makes light even when there is no sun. MY GOALS for this unit • Preview In this unit, students will use viewing, active listening, oral language, and reading and writing to discover different types and purposes for innovations. They will read a historical nonfiction story about Native American innovations and primal source journal entries about the development of the airplane. They will also read several short articles about innovations. They will listen to a podcast about space exploration. They will also listen to and sing a song about explorers and make 3D art from recycled materials. Finally, students will write a journal entry about a recent event. • Match icons with ideas Have students closely view the unit goals. Point out each icon and name it. Have students repeat each term. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold • Solidify new vocabulary by frequently pointing to and labeling depictions of innovations in your idea map and throughout this unit. Direct students to point to and talk about the images after you. • Have students create their own word banks and add new vocabulary to them. Then ask students to use these words in a discussion that reinforces the meaning of innovation as a new way of doing something to solve a problem or a new piece of technology. Amplify Ask students to write and say more about innovations and about problems that have been solved through innovation. Ask follow-up questions to prompt relevant details. CONNECT TO THE THEME People innovate to solve problems. 1. Look at the picture. Where is the boy? How do you know? 2. What do you think the boy is talking about? 3. How does his innovation solve a problem?
