Florida CONNECT Intermediate Basic Reading Skills - Teacher's Edition

21st-century learners are expected to be able to view, analyze, produce, and respond to media. While the language in videos is often heavily supported with visuals, students must develop receptive and expressive language skills to successfully participate in activities that involve media (Robinson, 2020). Each unit of Connect provides students an opportunity to explore media and the academic language necessary to discuss video form and content. Just as they do with other texts, students learn to view closely, monitor their comprehension, and express their interpretations of what is presented in videos and other multi-media. MEDIA Instructional routine • Explore and learn Preview the activities with students, reading aloud the title and displaying the visuals that accompany the videos or media. Ask students to predict what the video may be about. Help students make connections between the video topic and the unit theme. Read with students the activities that follow the video description and ask them to set a viewing purpose. Then, have students view the video once through, at first just paying attention to get the general idea. • Practice Have students re-watch the video, allowing them to pause and replay sections as needed. Students should be given ample time to view and review media to support comprehension. Circulate as students complete the activities, checking in to provide support, as necessary. Encourage and allow students to go to replay sections, as necessary. • Communicate Have students reflect in pairs, discussing what they learned from the video and the activities. Have students list new terms from the activities and ask them to generate 2-3 sentences using those new words. • Assess Monitor students’ fluency, pronunciation, and use of new terms throughout the media-related activities. Then use what you observe to inform planning for reteaching and reinforcement. Provide 1:1 or small group support as needed. Pay attention to students’ abilities to identify visual and linguistic elements in media and to ask specific questions. Txxxvii
