UNIT X 244 | UNIT 7 Instructional Routine: Before You Read p. Txxiv Use Prior Knowledge: Forests Preview image Read the information about biomes aloud. Direct students’ attention to the picture. Say: This animal is in a forest. A forest is one kind of biome. How do you know it’s a forest? (There are a lot of trees.) What other things can you see in a forest? A Ask and answer questions Have students ask and answer the questions in pairs. While they are talking, write these headings on the board: forest plants, forest animals, forest sights, and forest activities. When they finish, have them write their answers under the correct headings. Direct students to describe or sketch any plants, animals, or things to see or do they do not know words for. ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. Plants such as pine trees, oak trees, moss, mushrooms, and poison ivy live in a forest. Animals such as deer, bears, owls, and raccoons live in a forest. 2. In a forest, you can see birds, bugs, and wild plants. You can hike, climb trees, and go camping. Build Background: Biomes A • Preview image Preview the image with the class. Use it to elicit vocabulary, such as shark, ocean, fish, and plants. • Notice definitions Read the first sentence in the paragraph aloud. A/An _____ is _____. Explain that this kind of sentence gives a clue that a new word is being defined, and that boldface type shows what that word is. Read the rest of the paragraph, checking comprehension of the terms trait, allow, climate, and geography. • Ask and answer questions Direct students to discuss the questions in pairs before eliciting answers from the class. ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. I see fish, sharks, and plants in the ocean. 2. The fish need to be able to breathe in water. The sharks need to have sharp teeth and be fast swimmers to catch their prey. The plants need to get nutrients from the water. 3. At the ocean, I can see boats, crabs, seagulls, and fish. I can build sandcastles, collect seashells, go swimming, catch fish, and ride in a boat. EXPLORE AND LEARN DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold The amount of new scientific vocabulary in the unit can be challenging. To help students remember new vocabulary, write this sentence frame on the board: A/An _____ is ______. As the class encounters new terms, have students use this frame to write definitions for them, eliciting input from the class. Encourage students to copy the sentences in their notebooks, adding a definition or a sketch if helpful. Amplify After students finish the Build Background activity, ask them to write a short paragraph comparing and contrasting the biomes of an ocean and a forest. PRACTICE UNIT 7 / BEFORE YOU READ Forests Use Prior Knowledge You are going to read about biomes. Biomes are different environments. One type of biome is the forest. Look at the photo. What do you see? A Discuss the questions. 1. What kinds of plants and animals live in a forest? 2. What can you see and do in a forest? Biomes Build Background A biome is an area that contains a community of plants and animals. These plants and animals have traits that allow them to live in a certain climate and geography. The forest and the ocean are examples of biomes. A Discuss the questions. 1. Look at the picture. What do you see? 2. What traits do the fish and the plants have to help them survive in this biome? 3. What can you see and do at the ocean? How is it different from a forest? BEFORE YOU Read 244 UNIT 7
