Florida CONNECT Intermediate Basic Reading Skills - Teacher's Edition

Instructional routine • Explore and learn Preview the activities with students, reading aloud the title and displaying the visuals. Ask students to predict what the piece of art may be about. Read the essential question. Help students to make connections between the topic and the unit theme. Read with students the activities that follow the art description and ask them to set a viewing purpose. Then, have students look at the visuals closely and share with a peer what they see. • Practice Ask students to discuss their responses to the art in pairs. Then, have students complete the activities. Be sure that instructions are supported with visuals, or model for students what is expected. Remind them to use the example piece as a reference. • Communicate Have students work in pairs to reflect, discussing what they learned from viewing and discussing the art pieces and from creating a piece of visual art themselves. Have students list new terms from the activities (content related or academic) and ask them to generate 2-3 sentences using those new words. • Assess Monitor students’ fluency, pronunciation, and use of new terms throughout the art-related activities. Then use what you observe to inform reteaching and reinforcement and to facilitate in small groups. Pay attention to students’ abilities to identify artistic elements in different pieces, to articulate their interpretation of artwork, and to ask specific questions. Art is a subject that offers many opportunities for students to develop language skills in a nonthreatening context since the pieces students interpret are often language free. Visual art as a medium offers itself as a non-verbal method of communication for students (The New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies, 2003). Each unit of Connect provides students with an opportunity to learn about and discuss pieces of art and to apply what they learn about different artistic approaches to hands-on activities. Additionally, students discuss what they see and experience when presented with different art pieces. Art is also a subject that celebrates diversity. The artists featured in Connect units represent cultures from around the world.
