He born in 1773 in Massachusetts, and he was important during the American Revolution. He was a former slave who was African American and Native American. Before the Revolution, colonists were angry about their taxes – the money they had to give to the king of Britain. People in Boston were furious, so King George sent British soldiers to the city. These soldiers made the city crowded, and they used many of the resources the city had, like food. The soldiers also took part-time jobs, so there was less work for people in Boston. On March 5, 1770, angry colonists started to call some of the British soldiers’ names. They also threw snow and ice at them. The soldiers fought back. Crispus Attucks asked the soldiers to stop fighting people. The soldiers refused. Attucks was killed in the fight, which was later called the Boston Massacre. It gave people even more reasons to want a war with Britain. Attucks was the first person to die in the fight for independence. He was very brave and is a hero of the American Revolution. Do you have any questions? Danny: You said he was once a slave. Why did he help the colonists? Sandra: Good question. He ran away to get his freedom. He thought freedom was very important. So, he fought for all people in the Thirteen Colonies to be free. Julia: What was the most interesting thing you found out? Sandra: Everything was interesting, but I think it’s really interesting that the Boston Massacre Monument is also called the Crispus Attucks Monument. It’s in Boston and was put there in 1888. • B Retell to check listening comprehension Have pairs complete the sentences using key facts from the story. ANSWERS 1. Crispus Attucks; 2.
