Write a one or two sentence summary of that person’s biography. Reading • Build academic vocabulary Ask: What is a phrasal verb? (two words that put together have a different meaning than the original words) Ask students to look for the phrasal verb in bold type. (spoke out) Ask: What does it mean? (to give an opinion, often in public) Why did Benjamin Franklin speak out against slavery? (He spoke out against slavery because he thought it was wrong.) • Use a resource to determine meanings of new words Have students locate the first word in bold on page 217. (diplomat) Then ask them to identify the resource on the page that can help them understand the word’s meanings. (the glossary) Ask students to use the Internet to find out the name of a diplomat from their own country. • Connect to self Ask students if they have ever spoken out when they disagreed with someone or something. Ask: Have you ever disagreed with a person or an idea? What was it? Did you speak out against the idea you didn’t agree with? How did you do it? If students are reluctant to share, model by describing an experience of your own. • Identify author’s opinion Ask: What do you think is the author’s opinion about the people in this reading? Why? (She thinks the people are great Americans. That’s why she uses the title “Great Americans.” She talks about all the contributions they made.) • Home-School Connection Have students talk with their families about how they can respectfully and safely speak out against injustices they see. • Check In • Ask and answer questions Have students work in pairs to ask and answer the questions. Ask students to take notes on their answers and prepare to share responses in a class discussion. • Use evidence to support understanding Ask volunteers to share their answers with the class. Have one student share the answer to question 1 and another point out text evidence that supports the answer. Then have other pairs share their answers to questions 2 and 3.
