UNIT X 210 | UNIT 6 DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold • Reread the text and have students write down the important events in Salem Poor’s life. Divide students into two groups and have each group order the important events in Salem’s life. • Once the groups have arranged the events, they should compare with the other group to check that all important events were written down and are placed in the right order. Amplify • Direct students to predict what will happen to Salem in the rest of the war. Remind them that Salem faced many challenges, starting with the fact that he was born a slave. Ask students to predict if Salem will face any challenges in the war and what they may be. • In pairs, have students reconstruct the story orally. If they get stuck, they can peek back at the text. Reading • Follow the instructional routine for reading. The following strategies are a sample routine. • Listen actively Remind students to listen actively as you play the audio for pages 210–211. Help students set a purpose for listening, such as to learn what Salem Poor did. • Match oral to written words Replay the audio, this time asking students to read along silently. Model how to track the text with your finger as you listen. • Build oral fluency Remind students that reading smoothly and with expression comes with practice. Play the audio a final time, asking students to follow along in a whisper read to imitate intonation, phrasing, and pacing. Repeat as necessary until students demonstrate confidence. Direct students who have demonstrated proficiency to read passages of the text aloud. Provide encouragement and feedback on students’ oral reading fluency. • Use a glossary Ask volunteers to identify the words in bold type on pages 210 –211. (battle, brave) Then point out the glossary. Say: These words are in bold type. That is how we know that they are in the glossary. Model how to refer to the glossary to learn a new term and then go back to reread the text to deepen understanding. Say: I learned that to battle means to fight in a war. Salem must have fought British soldiers in the war. Remind students to use the glossary as they continue reading. • Understand how historical comparisons contribute to meaning Point out the sentence: The cost was 27 pounds, or a year’s salary for a working person at the time, which would be about $24,000 today. Explain that if the author didn’t convert the historical price to a modern price, we may not understand how hard Salem had to work to buy his freedom. Salem Poor Salem Poor was born into slavery in 1747. He was born on John Poor’s farm in Andover, Massachussets, and grew up as a slave there. In New England, at the time, some slaves could buy their freedom. On July 10, 1769, Salem Poor purchased his freedom from John Poor. The cost was 27 pounds, or a year’s salary for a working person at the time, which would be about $24,000 today.
