What do we know about biographies? (They tell us the story of a person’s life.) Read aloud the remaining descriptors and ensure students are familiar with the terms events and another person. • Discuss author’s purpose Ask students to think about why an author might write a biography. Guide students to understand that an author can use this genre to write stories that tell about people and how they helped build the countries we live in. Say: Because people build countries, it is important to understand how people lived and what they did. Biographies tell us the stories of people and what they did that is still important today. Preview • Learn new expressions Read the title aloud (Great Americans) and point out the picture of the flag. Ask: Do you think this flag represents “Great Americans”? (Yes, the flag represents all Americans. This is the a picture of the flag when these Americans lived.) • Use prior knowledge Ask students what they know about the people who helped build the United States. • Use illustrations to make a prediction Have students discuss the images in the text, paying special attention to the expressions on the people’s faces and their clothing.
