Use the sequence words to retell three things you have done in the past. Write complete sentences. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Present images that correspond with the main events of The Story of Arachne. Model how to determine which event is first. Say: Long ago, Arachne was a skillful weaver. Instruct students to put the images in order. Then have students label each image with a sequence word on a sticky note and use the language frames to describe the events. Amplify Have students choose a story from history they know about or can imagine, such as the discovery of a country or the invention of the wheel. After they select a topic, direct students to use the time and order signal phrases to retell the story. Oral Language: Retelling a Story Read aloud the language frames. Have students repeat. Explain that they can use these frames to restate information. A • Understand purpose Read the text in the text box aloud. Clarify that the purpose of summaries is to give the idea of a story, but the purpose of retelling a story is to create the story again. Ask: Why are relevant details important in a story? (They explain how characters feel, what they do, where and why events happen.) Say: When you retell a story, include the relevant details to create the story again. • Use a graphic organizer Give groups time to discuss stories before completing the graphic organizer.
