Synonyms Understand synonyms Read aloud the definiiton of synonyms on Practice Book page 92. Write the example words talk and speak on the board. Write the sentence I _____ to my friend Karina at recess. Have students read the sentence chorally first with talk and then with speak. Elicit that the meaning of the sentence does not change. A • Write synonyms Draw students’ attention to the example picture in Activity A on Practice Book page 92. Ask: What do you do when you want to call out on the playground? (I yell/shout.) Have students chorally spell the synonyms. • Have students identify the pictures. Read the numbers 1–6 and have the class call out the words. Read the directions aloud. Have students work independently to complete the activity. Call on volunteers to share their answers, spelling the words for the class to correct their work. Have students work independently to complete the activity. Call on volunteers to read aloud each word. Call on another student to read and spell the synonym. Write the example sentence on the board: It’s going to be a hot day. Elicit the synonym for the word hot. (warm) • Have students write their sentences independently. Then have them exchange their work with a partner to peer check it. Call on volunteers to share their sentences with the class. ANSWERS Students’ sentences should be complete, grammatically correct, and include synonyms from Activity B. D • Use synonyms Draw students’ attention to Activity D on Practice Book page 93. Chorally read the words in the box. Call on a volunteer to read the example sentence and identify the synonym for the underlined word. (kids) • Have students complete the activity independently. Check answers as a class. Call on volunteers to read each complete sentence aloud, substituting the synonym for the underlined word.
