UNIT x 142 | UNIT 4 Instructional Routine: Grammar p. Txxviii Grammar in Action A • Understand genre Preview “Soybeans” with students. Say: The last text we read was realistic fiction. This is an informational text. How are these two genres alike? Discuss with students, reinforcing the idea that realistic fiction includes fiction and facts, while informational texts give facts and real information. They are alike because they both include facts. • Skim to predict content words Read aloud the title and point out the photos. Say: What will this text tell us about soybeans? Direct students to skim the first two sentences of each paragraph. Model how to predict content vocabulary. Say: The first two sentences of paragraph 1 say soybeans are popular all over the world. I think I will see names of countries in the paragraph. Elicit Brazil, Australia, and Japan. Then have students make predictions about vocabulary in remaining paragraphs. • Listen to distinguish final -s Elicit that plural nouns often end in -s that sounds like z. Play the audio once, asking students to read along silently and listen for words that end in s as z. (farmers, soybeans, hills, stews, animals, bakers, vitamins, minerals, calories, opinions) Say: Listen for the sound of final -s. This can be a clue to words that name more than one thing. • Listen to media to build academic language Replay the audio this time having students listen to gain a general understanding of the article without looking at the words. • Check understanding Ask: What is this article about? (advantages of soy) What products does it discuss? (soy products: soymilk, tofu, soy oil, soy flour, and soybeans) Is the soybean important in the United States? (yes) Do some people love soybeans and others hate them? (yes) Have students support their answers with evidence from the text. B Use the vocabulary Read the questions aloud and confirm understanding of confusing terms. Then have pairs discuss the questions before answering. Remind students to support their answers with evidence from the text. ANSWERS 1. soybean oil, milk, tofu, and flour; 2. because soy flour has more protein; 3. because soy products have a lot of protein, less fat, and fewer calories than meat EXPLORE AND LEARN PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Have students complete the vocabulary activity in a small group. Direct students to match products in the picture to words in the text to help answer the questions. Then model how to use clues to determine the meaning of the terms in context and write a sentence using the word. Say: I see milk in the picture, but I don’t know how to spell the word. The text says “can’t drink milk,” so that must be the correct spelling: m-i-l-k. The sentence says “People who can’t drink milk from animals may be able to drink soymilk.” I’ll write Milk is made from soybeans. Amplify Extend the activity by having students write a brief paragraph using all six of the new vocabulary words. The paragraph should focus on facts and opinions about soy products and use the same meanings of the vocabulary words that are used in “Soybeans.” UNIT 4 / CONNECT TO GRAMMAR Grammar in Action A Read the informational text. Farmers in China were the first to grow soybeans. Today, soybeans are not only important in the United States, but they’re also popular all over the world. Soybeans can grow in almost all climates. They grow in the tropical climates of Brazil, in northern Australia, and in the cool hills of northern Japan. Many people cook and eat whole soybeans. People also add them to soups or stews. Soybean oil is good for cooking and baking. Soymilk is made by soaking soybeans in water, then blending the mixture. People who can’t drink milk from animals may be able to drink soymilk. Many people eat tofu. It’s made from soymilk and is similar to cheese. Bakers can use soy f lour instead of wheat flour. Soy flour has more protein. Soybeans have fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are often a substitute for meat because they also have a lot of protein. They have less fat and fewer calories than meat. People often have strong opinions about soybeans. They either love them or hate them! Soybeans Tutorial B Use the vocabulary 1. What products are made from soybeans? 2. Why do you think some bakers use soy f lour instead of wheat flour? 3. Why do you think some people eat soybeans and soy products instead of meat? UNIT 4 142 CONNECT TO Grammar
