Florida CONNECT Intermediate Basic Reading Skills - Teacher's Edition

UNIT x UNIT 4 | 137 Reading • Identify time of events Confirm students’ understanding of events by having them identify the time of events. Read aloud the text on page 137, stopping after each paragraph to ask a question about timing. For example, after paragraph 1, ask: When did Zoey’s mother go to the doctor? (before she came to the farmers market) After paragraph 2, ask: Do Zoey and her mother have the ingredients for the recipes? (no, not yet) Support students in identifying the present, past, and future tense words that express the timeframe. Ask: Why do good readers pay attention to the time of events? Elicit that the timeframe helps good readers better understand the order of events in a story. • Scan for key action words Direct students to scan the text for the highlighted key words pick her up (137), and catches up and pulls out (130). Have students pantomime their meaning. Remind students that many verbs include small direction words (prepositions). Then ask: What do you notice about these phrases? (pick her up has an object in between) Explain that an object can sometimes come between the action word and direction word. • Explain character development Have students work in pairs to discuss how the character Zoey develops throughout the story plot. They should include evidence from the beginning, middle, and end of the story. • Connect to self Ask students if they have done what Zoey does in the story. Ask: Have you helped anyone start a healthy habit? What did you do? • Home-School Connection Have students talk with their families about creating better health habits, such as eating apples as a snack instead of chips, and eating green vegetables at meals. Invite students to create a plan, then have a sharing day when students describe how they helped their families just like Zoey helped her mother by getting recipes. Check In • Ask and answer questions Have students work in pairs to ask and answer the questions. Ask students to take notes on their answers and prepare to share responses in a class discussion. • Use evidence to support understanding Ask volunteers to share their answers with the class. Have one student share the answer to question 1 and another point out text evidence that supports the answer. Then have another pair share their summaries for question 2. ANSWERS 1. First, you grate sweet potatoes. Then you stir in eggs, flour, salt, and pepper. Next, you put some oil in a saucepan, and you add the vegetable mixture to cook it. Finally, you serve the pancakes with yogurt. 2. The doctor told her to eat more fruits and vegetables to control her diabetes. PRACTICE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Have students work in pairs to summarize what the doctor told Zoey’s mom. Tell them to act out and use expressions and gestures to retell the doctor’s advice. Pair students with the same home language so they can discuss the content and new vocabulary with homelanguage help. Amplify Tell students who have demonstrated proficiency to write their summary for question 2 in complete sentences. Direct them to cite text evidence to support their answers. Provide students with a sentence frame, if necessary: I know this because_____. Talk and write: Fresh Finds at the Farmers Market Ask and answer in pairs: Why should people eat fresh foods? Identify and describe three fresh foods then explain where people can buy them. UNIT 4 / READING When Zoey’s mother arrives to pick her up, she has just come from a doctor’s appointment. She looks around the market and says, “The doctor told me that I should eat more fruits and vegetables to help control my diabetes.” “I know!” Zoey exclaims. “It won’t be hard. Marisol’s cousin gave me some new recipes, and we can get the ingredients here!” Marisol’s parents tell Zoey’s mother, “Zoey is welcome here every Saturday. She is a good influence on Marisol.” Zoey’s mother looks at her daughter, who nods with happiness. “I will be very glad to bring her,” she says. “And I’ll buy fresh fruits and vegetables from the farmers market every week. This will be good for all of us.”  CHECK IN 1. Sequencing What are the steps to make vegetable pancakes? 2.
