Developing readers encounter many unknown words when reading. While the development of phonetic knowledge is important for decoding, learning words by sight can also benefit students. As they begin to read, the ability to automatically recognize and identify words helps them to gain confidence. Many English words are irregular and do not follow conventional phonics patterns. Fry (1996) researched a sight-word list created in the 1960s by Dolch. He expanded on that research and created a list of 1,000 words that appear most frequently in published texts. He ranked them by frequency and found: • 25 words make up approximately one third of all words found in published texts; • 100 words comprise approximately half of all the words found in published texts; • 300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material. (Fry, 1996; Kress & Fry, 2015) The following chart lists the first 100 high-frequency words. It is recommended that learners be directly taught high-frequency words. developing readers in intermediate grades may still need practice with high frequency words as they move toward automaticity.
