UNIT x UNIT 4 | 129 Learn a figure of speech Write hand over on the board. Elicit that hand can name a thing or an action. Explain that as an action, hand means to give something with your hand. Hand over means to give something for someone else to take care of it. Say: Hand over is a figure of speech. It is a colorful way to say give or give to take care of. What are some things we hand over to people? Elicit responses to check comprehension. Distribute sticky notes and have students mark this figure of speech as they read the text. Reading: Fresh Finds at the Farmers Market • Follow the instructional routine for reading. The following strategies are a sample routine. • Follow oral content Play the audio for page 129. Ask students to listen for a basic understanding of the narrative without looking at the written text. • Match oral to written words Replay the audio for page 129. This time ask students to read silently. Model how to use a finger or notecard to track the text. • Build oral fluency Replay the audio a final time, asking students to follow along in a whisper read and imitate intonation and phrasing. Repeat as necessary until students demonstrate confidence. Have students who have demonstrated proficiency read the page aloud together. • Call attention to the word approval. Ask: Who can explain what approval means? Observe students to see if they notice the glossary before pointing it out. • Identify point of view and perspective Ask: Who is the narrator of this story? (the author, Annie C. Holdren) Point out that this is called “third person point of view” and that the narrator uses the words she and they (when not using dialog). Clarify that this is different from the character’s perspective. Perspective refers to the character’s inner thoughts. Ask: What is Zoey’s perspective about her friendship with Marisol? (She wants Marisol’s approval.) Check In • Monitor comprehension Ask and answer the questions as a class. Have a volunteer explain jacket. Then tell students that the answer to question 1 is stated in the text. Ask students to point out where they found the answer. • Understand genre Review the term realistic with students. (like real life) Remind students that in realistic fiction texts, characters and events are like real life. Help students identify realistic features of the text. • Connect to society Ask students to share how and why Zoey and Marisol are realistic characters. Ask: Do you know anyone like Zoey or Marisol? ANSWERS 1. Her mom won’t have time to shop after the baby arrives. It’s pretty. She feels good. 2. They are going to eat lunch at a picnic table. EXPLORE AND LEARN PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold • Some students may need more time and exposure to a text to comprehend it fully. Allow these students time in class to read the text prior to reading it with the class. • Provide students with a storyboard template to track story events. Ask students to draw the first event in the story and label key words or actions. Then support them in writing a description. Use the storyboard while reading the entire text to support students’ literal comprehension. Amplify Have students connect what they read on the first page to their understanding of realistic fiction. Ask them to reread the genre descriptors on page 128. Then have them identify the setting and the two characters and explain how they connect to realistic fiction. UNIT 4 / READING by Annie C. Holdren Fresh Finds at the Farmers Market “Nice jacket! Is it new?” Zoey looks at her friend Marisol and hopes that is a compliment. She says, “My mom took me to get it. She won’t have time to get me new clothes after the baby comes.” “I really like it,” Marisol confirms. “It’s so pretty!” Zoey smiles. She isn’t sure why she is so anxious for Marisol’s approval, but it makes her feel good when she gets it. The two girls leave the classroom for lunch, and Marisol hands her backpack over to Zoey. “Bring my backpack!” Marisol shouts, and quickly runs for a picnic table. CHECK IN 1. Fact and opinion Why did Zoey get a new jacket? What does Marisol think of it? How does that make Zoey feel? 2. Comprehension Where are the girls going? GLOSSARY approval the belief that something is good 129 UNIT 4 Fresh Finds at the Farmers Market
