Project | 123H UNIT 4 Project Our Healthy Habits–Class Recipe Book As a class, brainstorm a list of healthy food choices on an anchor chart. Ask students how they believe healthy food is prepared. Then, share cookbooks and recipe pages with students. Encourage them to describe what they see. Ask: Which recipes are healthy? Which ones are not healthy? How do you know? Why is there a photograph of the food? What do you think the words in the recipes describe? Why are there numbers in the recipes? Tell students they will create a healthy class cookbook, describing how they would cook or prepare a healthy recipe. Ask students to share their ideas for the cookbook. Allow students to write their own recipe or work with a partner. Will the recipes be breakfast foods, snack foods, lunch foods, or will the book include a variety of recipes? Provide each student with a recipe template that reserves room for a picture and the written recipe on one sheet. Students should include a picture or drawing of their recipe in the large space of the paper. The recipe should be written on the lined section of the template. When students’ recipes are complete, ask students to brainstorm ideas for their cookbook’s title and cover. Ask: How do you want to organize your recipes? Have students review published cookbooks to understand how cookbooks are organized and get ideas on how to structure the class cookbook. Make a copy of the Healthy Habits–Class Recipe Book for each child. Bind or staple each book. Students can take the recipe books home and prepare healthy recipes with their families. Encourage students to report back to class on how their recipes turn out.
