98 | UNIT 3 UNIT 3 / AFTER YOU READ FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Write: Sequence words Write a paragraph describing the things you did before class today. Use at least four sequencing words. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold Ordering events in a story is a good way to check for comprehension. Simplify the task by first having students retell a personal routine or their daily classroom routine. Once students have listed the events, introduce the sequencing words they can use to retell everyday events and then to talk about the events in the story. Amplify Have students imagine they are Kiki. Have them write a letter to Grandma about their time at the Pueblo and how they feel after returning to Los Angeles. Instructional Routine: After You Read p. Txxvi Apply the Reading Strategy: Sequence Review academic language Review terms that signal sequence. Ask: What are some words that help readers notice the order of events in a story? (first, then, next, after that, finally) If necessary, point out some examples in the story. (the next afternoon, page 94; after, page 95; the night before, page 97) Create a word bank on the board and list responses. A Sequence events Have students work in pairs to arrange the sequence of the story. Allow plenty of time for discussion before pairs share their answers with the class. Remind students to point out where in the text they found evidence for their answers. ANSWERS 5, 2, 1, 6, 3, 4 B Use a graphic organizer Have volunteers read the directions aloud. Model putting the second event into the graphic organizer. Say: I know that the second thing that happened was, Kiki’s family drives from Los Angeles to the Pueblo in Taos, so I’ll put it in the second place in the sequencing chart. Then have students work independently to place the rest of the answers in the chart. Have students check answers in pairs. ANSWERS (2) Kiki’s family drives from Los Angeles to the Pueblo in Taos. (3) Kiki’s family arrives in the Pueblo. (4) Kiki bakes bread with her mother and grandmother. (5) Kiki takes a tour of the Pueblo. (6) Kiki tells her grandmother what she learned about the Pueblo. C Retell a series of events Have students look back to the story to find out exactly when the events happen. Then have students retell the story to each other using the time phrases. ANSWERS Sample answers: First, Kiki is upset at school. A week later, Kiki’s family drives from Los Angeles to the Pueblo in Taos. Two days later, Kiki’s family arrives in the Pueblo.
